Planet Money: “Inside Washington’s Money Machine”

NPR’s Planet Money describes itself as

… a multimedia team covering the global economy. We produce a twice-weekly podcast and create radio stories forMorning Edition, All Things Considered and This American Life. We also write a blog.

On November 1, Planet Money’s podcast took on one of Coffee Party Austin’s central topics: Money in Politics. Titled “Inside Washington’s Money Machine”, the podcast recounts several amusing attempts—all rebuffed—to listen in on meetings between the funders and the funded.

Especially choice is the tale told by a former lobbyist, now working for campaign finance reform, of his encounter with a Congressman demanding a contribution from the lobbyist’s PAC.

UPDATE: The former lobbyist, Jimmy Williams, is executive director of the Get Money Out Foundation, which has just merged with United Republic, of which Mr. Williams is listed as Co-Founder and Senior Strategist. According to his capsule bio, “Williams’ shift directly from lobbyist to reformer sent shockwaves throughout Washington’s lobbying community.”

  1. Joanne Richards says:

I hope that this Planet Money series does for campaign finance what “Inside Job” did for the financial crisis – tell the true story for all to see.
