Sticky: Clean Elections Group

The Clean Elections Group of Coffee Party Austin is, like Coffee Party USA, distressed by the huge and growing influence of big money in politics. We believe that an important part of the solution is to provide citizen funding for election campaigns as an alternative to the special-interest campaign contributions and personal wealth on which so many election candidates depend. We believe that Texas should follow the lead of such Fair Elections states as Maine, Arizona, Connecticut, North Carolina, and New Mexico, where, thanks to citizen funding, electoral races are seeing more candidates from diverse backgrounds, incumbents are spending more time working on issues that matter to their constituents, and the number of small donors has increased several fold.

In Texas, we believe, citizen funding should begin with judicial elections, as it has in North Carolina. Our current objective is to introduce—and pass!—a bill in the Texas legislature that would offer funding for statewide judicial campaigns, i.e., campaigns for the Texas Supreme Court and the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals.
